Vessel name:

Stormy Duchess

Vessel Type:

40' Baba Cutter

Engine:

65 Hp Volvo

Captain:

Wayne Spangler

Stormy Duchess is a 40 foot cutter, which (for the uninitiated) means it has one main sail and two jibs (a Yankee and a Staysail).  Manufactured by Baba in 1980, she's a beamy gal with canoe-stern and a 65 horse Volvo diesel engine.  She is a rear cockpit, wheel steering, roller jibed Yankee & Staysail sailing machine.  The V-berth is large enough for two, one after berth a starboard and a port berth.  She has the essentials: a water closet complete with shower; 12 volt refrigerator; propane oven; and hot and cold running water.  Wayne has three (count them) three GPS systems, radar, marine band radio, a dingy with beacon, and he just acquired a satellite phone.

Wayne Spangler of Rice Lake, WI. has owned and  captained the Stormy Duchess for over 20 years.  Wayne's son Jon Spangler of San Diego is for all intense purposes the First Mate.  Wayne an architect by trade has made Rice lake his home for over 40 Years with his wife Edie.

Stormy's home port has been split between Bayfield, WI on Lake Superior, and Tortola British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

Special thanks to our good friends Bob Lam , Brad Jones, and Dave Charron for their generosity and assistance in setting up this tracking site, as well as David Jones of Caribbean Weather Center Ltd for providing weather forecasts.
