Lake Superior
Stormy was for years berthed in Bayfield, Wisconsin. During this time, the Apostle Islands were the main sailing destination in that Bayfield rests at the heart of the Apostles. Her first significant trips included yearly Trans-Superior trips from Bayfield to points along the North Shore of Lake Superior, including Isle Royale (Michigan) and Thunder Bay and the Slate Islands in Canada.
Caribbean
In 1987, Stormy made her first trip to the Caribbean. This was accomplished by (a) sailing through Lake Superior,
Lake Huron and Lake Eerie; (b) motoring (with the mast off) through the Eerie
Canal to the Hudson River; (c) sailing (after raising the mast again) down the
Hudson River to New York Harbor; and (generally speaking) (d) sailing from New
York to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
From our new “home port” in Tortola, Stormy has set out to virtually all points in the entire western Caribbean, including but not limited to the Virgin Islands, St. Barth’s, St. Maartin, Saba, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Mustique, the Grenadines, and Grenada. In addition to the West Indies, Stormy ventured to the “ABC” islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao along the northern coast of Venezuela.
In 2001, Captain Wayne helmed Stormy across the pond in three stages: Leg I from Tortola to Bermuda, Leg II from Bermuda to the Azores, and Leg III from the Azores to Lagos, Portugal. The crew of Jon Spangler and Kevin McClone sailed with Captain Wayne for the entire trip, while additional crew members Dave and Dan Charron of Rice Lake joined in on the fun for Leg III from the Azores to Portugal.
Click on “Trans Atlantic 2001 ” for details, including a map showing the day-to-day tracking of each leg of our trip across the Atlantic, as well as the quotes and comments on the Ship’s Log chronicling the trip in the words of the captain and crew.
In 2002, Captain Wayne brought Stormy back across the pond home to Tortola: Leg I from Lagos to the Canary islands, Crew consisted of Captain Wayne, his lovely wife Eddie and Kevin McClone. Leg II from the Canary islands to Tortola, had a crew the crew of Wayne, Kevin and Dave Charron.
